As a parents, one of our main goals has always been for our kids to recognize others' needs and to take action. With Pokémon running amok, and media blaring its paradoxical mantra, You are EVERYTHING! You are NOTHING!; it is quite a daunting task.
I am so grateful to Reaching The Hungry for giving our family big and small opportunities for service. We were thrilled to join them for a one-day trip to partner with a church and a lovely pastor in the hills above Ensenada, Mexico.
I wondered what my 12 year old had taken away from such a short trip. In her own words:
One Day Could Change A Life
By Anna Nunez
What could one day do for someone in need? This is a question that might have crossed your mind once or twice. I got a chance to really look at this question close up. On a one-day trip to Mexico with Reaching The Hungry I saw this in a different way. When I arrived, I wasn't thinking of what the people's future would be like, but what their needs were right then. That question still needs an answer though. The answer is: it can do plenty. It can mean a lot to the parent of the child you entertained so that she could have a minute to rest. Or to the person who listened to you speak about God and decided to invite Him into their life. What about the person you gave medicine to that helped him/her or their family. When you see these people's needs it puts an aching in your heart. You want to help. That is why trips like this are so important. There is so much need in the world that we can't ignore. It only takes a day to make a difference. It says in Matthew 28:19-20 " Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in them in the name of the Father, the son, and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you to the very end of the age." The most amazing part is receiving power from the Holy Spirit. It also says in Acts 1:8 "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." I could feel that power with me wherever I went.
Wow! She felt an ache in her heart; she felt the power of the Holy Spirit. This mamma wept tears of joy at these words. I agree with Anna's title, One Day Could Change a Life; and it just might be yours.
